Hello. My name’s Neil and I’m the creator, editor and writer of the Commodore Format Archive at www.commodoreformatarchive.com. It’s a website dedicated to celebrating the Commodore 64 magazine of the same name, as well as the many great and often little known games that were released between 1990 and 1995.
THE STORY OF THE WEBSITE SO FAR
I started the website in 2014 and it’s always been free. Like you, I love Commodore Format and I love the C64. The website has literally hundreds of articles: exclusive interviews with people I was told would NEVER talk, like Sean Masterson and other staff. There’s an issue by issue guide to the magazine which tells the story of the mag and the games – and we’ve created dozens of features covering everything from the real story behind the awful Dick Tracy to a chat with one of the guys who worked on the doomed C64GS project. All of this is new. New stories, new information, and completely free. I’ve done it for free for a very long time. And I want to do more.
WHAT WE WANT TO DO NEXT
As the story behind CF is almost told, I’d now like to shift the focus on to the many wonderful, little known games that were produced for the C64 between 1990 and 1995 in the UK. Basically, the ones CF featured! We’ve already done a top and bottom games rundown, but that’s merely scratching the surface. I want to tell the stories behind the glorious, little triumphed budget games and the C64 carts that were produced for the ill-fated GS; I’d like to chat with and talk more to the guys who produced the first wave of indie games that appeared from 1994 onwards, and..well, basically a lot more like that. If you’ve seen our top and bottom rated features, or our best of budget – we’d be doing more of that, in depth.
HERE’S WHY I’M HUMBLY ASKING FOR A SMALL, MONTHLY OR ONE-OFF DONATION
All of this takes time. I’m a freelance writer, and when I started the site I had a lot more time. Now I don’t. My evenings (and all through the night!) are taken up with looking after our two very small children. The time I used to have to dedicate to the site has simply vanished, and I can’t use my time in the day because I need to be filling that with paid work.
AND IF YOU MAKE A SMALL DONATION, THIS SITE WOULD BECOME PAID WORK
You probably follow me here. If I get enough patrons here, I’ll be able to put aside time in the working day to write more. And I’d really, really love to.
DON’T WORRY – THE SITE IS FREE AND ALWAYS WILL BE.
But it’ll get a LOT bigger with your support. Truly, we can make it a celebration of the C64 in the 1990s, which is an era so many people don’t know anything about.
BUT IF YOU DONATE $1 A MONTH OR MORE, YOU GET ACCESS TO SOME REALLY COOL STUFF NOBODY ELSE WILL
If you do decide to become a supporter, you get THREE BIG BENEFITS:
1. Exclusive access to our Diary of a Gamebuster feature, which is CF writer Andy Roberts’ issue-by-issue look behind the scenes at the creation of the mag’s most popular section. It includes gossip and pictures never seen or heard before, and which will only ever be available to Patrons. Read the first installment for free here.
2. I’ll also bring you a fortnightly blog in which I talk about all manner of things CF and C64. Recent Patreon only articles have included a mammoth two-part piece on the C64 GS, and the time in 1993 CF tried to predict the future (and how it panned out!). I’m a professional journo and a C64 fan: this is top quality Commodore 64 writing you won’t get anywhere else.
3. AND you will also get access to every article we publish one week early!
I want to keep the main CF site paywall free, so I figured a Patreon page like this for donations really was the best solution. You pay a dollar, you get cool stuff, and the site gets funded. Everyone wins, the site grows. If you can spare it, and you love CF and what we do, please give this some thought. Thanks for reading!
