We know a lot of you who enjoy the Commodore Format Archive are casual C64 fans. From your feedback we know that many of you haven’t thought about the Commodore for a lot of years – so perhaps the world of emulation is new to you.

Once you download and unzip a Power Pack  you’ll find a bunch of files called .tap. You can load those up into one of the many free Commodore 64 emulators that you’ll find online, and it’ll act in exactly the same way as your fave 8 bit machine would. You’re loading virtual cassettes into a virtual C64.

BUT DON’T I NEED A JOYSTICK?

There are options on most emulators that let you connect a controller of sorts to your computer, but don’t worry if you haven’t got one. You can define some keyboard controls and start playing straight away.

WHICH EMULATOR SHOULD I GET?

There are loads of them out there, but our personal favourite is Vice. Some people also really love CCS. If you get stuck, come and say hello on the Facebook page, where people are always really happy to help.

C64 MINI OR MAXI

Just whack the games onto a USB stick and sideload them as you would any other Commodore game on your Mini or Maxi. There’s official support for all that here.
